THE BOX: AN INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION
An oversized box (made of wood, 8’x8’) with label “Box” on it is installed in an open space of significant conference foot traffic. A performance space of 6 to 10’ surrounds the box, defining the perimeter of the piece. At any given time, there are two to four performers outside of the box, within the performance space. They relate to the box, to each other, and interact with conference participants.
The Box is either performed as an Installation or a 1 hr Performance. The performers (or some number of the total) will be with the box at all times, day and night.
The audience may observe the performance, or engage the performers’ invitations to interact. The performer/characters are all extensively trained in physical theatre, European Clown technique, improvisation and interactive performance.
The characters are all convinced they are “out of the box”, and each has a distinct set of criteria for what makes them so (i.e. “unique”, “creative”, “innovative”). At the same time, each is fascinated by what is in the box, convinced there must be something of value there.
Each character has a method for engaging the audience – questions, queries, actions, and tests. They are seeking their insight, and attempting to discern whether they are also “out of the box”. These interactions consist in a SURVEY of sorts, whose results are presented on the last day of the conference.
The result is an engaging, provocative, entertaining and highly creative infusion of novelty into the Forum. It is designed to further the exploration of Creativity and challenge participants to question their assumptions.
Resources needed: An open space, 25 x 25 (or 25 x 15 if against a wall). Six hours on location to assemble. Appropriate signage.
